Every new shop we open is a little expansion of Paul’s uniquely colourful, eclectic world. Another opportunity to welcome our customers into an oasis of curiosity and intrigue, filled with one-of-a-kind art, vintage furniture, and – of course – lots of nice clothes. It’s with great pleasure that we announce the opening of a new shop in Shanghai, in the city’s landmark Bund Finance Center. Recognised as a significant architectural achievement in its own right, the BFC is home to some of the most respected names in luxury retail, names we’re proud to now call neighbours.

Following the same unmistakeable design language that runs as a common thread through all our locations, the Shanghai shop features themes and inflections that will be familiar to any longtime Paul Smith devotee. The shop’s impressive façade consists of slatted cladding which changes colour depending on the viewing angle. Seen from one side it is a deep royal blue, while from the other it appears entirely red. A clever visual trick which requires visitors to pay attention, it brings to mind Sir Paul’s motto of ‘don’t just look, see.’

The shop also blurs the lines between traditional retail layout and gallery space with a vibrant and unpredictable assortment of artwork from Sir Paul’s personal collection. A particularly whimsical touch can be found in the fitting room lobby, the walls of which are covered in vintage British bus tickets. A total of 6,385 tickets have been used, which were collected in the UK before being shipped to Shanghai and painstakingly applied on-site. It echoes the famous ‘domino room’ of our Albemarle Street shop in Mayfair, London, which is tiled with 26,000 dominoes.
