Paul in Bangkok

Paul recently made a trip to Bangkok, to coincide with the opening of our new Thailand flagship shop. To document his time there we shot a short film, following Paul as he visited traditional cafes, meandered through bustling flower markets, and admired the ornate architecture of the city’s temples.

There has never been a shortage of things to do in Bangkok. The Thai capital is a riot of colour, sound and flavour – charmingly chaotic or impossibly hectic, depending on your point of view. But either way, it’s certainly never boring, and now you can add one more thing to the long list of must-sees in this truly unique city: Paul Smith’s newly opened Thailand flagship. The shop is a perfect evocation of the Paul Smith design philosophy, with an eclectic assortment of vintage furniture alongside unique artwork from Paul’s own collection. But it also reflects its immediate environment: the shop’s façade comprises bespoke tiles made by local craftspeople using traditional techniques.

Paul travelled to Bangkok for the opening of the new shop, but was able to fit in a few other stops along the way. We dispatched a camera crew to accompany Paul as he jotted down his thoughts in a traditional Thai café, strolled through a vibrant flower market, and visited some of Bangkok’s extraordinary temples.

He might have been accompanied by photographers, but Paul doesn’t go anywhere without taking some pictures of his own. One of his many mottos is, ‘You can find inspiration in everything. And if you can’t, look again,’ and nowhere is this ethos more evident than in his photography. He spots those odd little moments that others might miss, creating images filled with humour and curiosity. We’ve taken a selection of Paul’s Bangkok photos and scrapbooked them together for your enjoyment.
