Paul in LA and Tokyo
As the year draws to a close, we look back at Paul’s globetrotting trip in October, taking in Tokyo and LA – and getting two back-to-back Wednesdays in the process.
October was a rather packed month for Paul Smith – the man and the brand. We launched A Frame Around a Picture, a two-part exhibition celebrating our contribution to the world of tailoring, so called because that’s what Paul considers a suit to be: a frame around the picture that is you. The first part, entitled Six Decades of Paul Smith Tailoring, presented a deep dive into the archive, with suits and separates from across our history. Arranged into three sections, each based on one of Paul’s favourite sayings, the exhibition was a fascinating look at the playfulness and innovation that has characterised our designs over the years. Jackets constructed inside out, photogram-printed moleskin, skirts made out of ties – all manner of sartorial mischief was on display.
No sooner had the doors to the exhibition opened than Paul was off to LA – a flight which, by a quirk of time zones, gave Paul his second Wednesday of the week, directly after the first – for the next part of this global exhibition. The second instalment, Dressing the Greats, took place at our Melrose Avenue shop in LA and focused on our long history of making clothes for some of the biggest names in film, music, television and art. Paul was in town for the grand opening, a party at the Chateau Marmont, and a couple of podcast appearances, too.
In both cities, Paul was snapping away on his iPhone as usual, capturing little details and fleeting moments which a lot of people might have missed. We’ve put together a scrapbook of his globetrotting trip for you to enjoy.
