Paul's Working Wardrobe
Office dress codes have undergone rather a lot of change in recent years, and knowing what to wear for work can be a challenge. To try and make sense of this strange new world we find ourselves in, we spoke to Paul about how his own fashion habits have changed.
PAUL SMITH ON THE MODERN WORKING WARDROBE.
In today’s world, you don’t always want the smart suit with the white shirt and the tie. So many people have the suit in their head as being something that’s very, very formal, but you don’t have to wear it in such a formal way.
Jackets
Whether it’s a softly tailored blazer or a highly practical chore coat, a jacket is the perfect place to begin building your office wardrobe. With an emphasis on quality, comfort, and versatility, our range of jackets utilises modern cuts and exceptional fabrics from the likes of Loro Piana.
Knitwear
For more casual days, swap out the jacket for a cardigan, or a simple crew neck – our cashmere ones, knitted from Todd & Duncan yarn, are particularly lovely. On chillier days, a roll neck or a chunkier lambswool jumper is an excellent option.
T-Shirts and Polos
Layered up with knitwear or paired with casual tailoring – a stock of t-shirts and polos is essential for the working week. A knitted polo, in cotton or wool, is one of the most useful pieces you can own, easy to dress up or down, whereas a pique polo is a touch sportier. A simple t-shirt with a stripe detail is destined to become a key part of your rotation.
Trousers
Tailored trousers are deceptively versatile, pairing easily with tailored jackets, of course, but just as easily with knitwear, overshirts, or chore jackets (a combination that Paul is particularly fond of). As well as traditional iterations, we offer versions with drawstring waistbands for added comfort. And then there are the other go-to office trousers: cotton chinos, cords, and even denim jeans.
Shoes
All of the above can be worn with a pair of modern white trainers – such as our ever-popular Basso style – or something a bit smarter. Slip-on loafers are timelessly elegant, and just as versatile as trainers, looking great with classic tailoring, casual cotton, or worn-in denim.
