Tailoring Through Another Lens

Created as part of our recent exhibition in Tokyo, we present five short films which, in playful fashion, bring the world of Paul Smith tailoring to life. Revealing the breadth and versatility of our collection, the vignettes show Paul Smith suits which range from business classic to statement-making, reflecting Paul’s role in helping to radically reinvent the suit during the ‘80s and ‘90s.

We see a businessman wearing a classic slate-grey two-piece on his morning walk to the office; a keen-eyed collector arrives at a gallery in a hot pink double-breasted suit; a free-thinking creative mixes work and play in a modern tailored look, and a cuddly tiger causes alarm in a lift. We might be best known for adding a pop of colour or an unexpected detail to our suits, but classic tailoring has always been at the very heart of what we do. Here, a man dresses for success in an elegant grey two-piece with a faint overcheck.

Long gone are the days when the suit was a symbol of conformity. Over time, tailoring has become a vital tool of self-expression – an extension of the wearer’s personality. Suits like this pink double-breasted number are made for standing out.

Today’s hybrid work environments require a versatile capsule of soft tailoring, simple shirts, and well-cut trousers. Items which are smart enough to make the wearer feel composed and elegant, but casual enough to still jump on a bike and cycle through the city. It’s what we call our Modern Working Wardrobe.

It’s our firm belief that tailoring has to keep up with the people who are wearing it. Here, our protagonist mixes work with play as he conducts a business call from the top of an octopus-shaped slide in a seemingly abandoned playpark.
