Dressing the Greats
Our LA shop plays host to a star-studded exhibition of tailoring from the Paul Smith archive, made for and worn by some of the world’s most recognisable faces.
The first of two exhibitions celebrating the history of Paul Smith tailoring, A Frame Around a Picture: Dressing the Greats turns our famous Melrose Avenue shop into a gallery space, presenting a dazzling array of tailoring worn by some of the biggest names in music, film, television, and art.

Since the earliest days of his career, Paul has found inspiration in unlikely places, this endless curiosity exemplified by his personal motto: ‘you can find inspiration in everything – and if you can’t, look again.’ Where more traditional designers might have limited their search for inspiration to the world of fashion only, Paul has always looked to music, art, architecture, furniture design and cinema to inform his collections, and in turn those worlds have been inspired by him. All manner of creative people – from actors and directors to singers and musicians – have gravitated towards him and his eponymous brand over the years, leading to an impressive roster of stars dressed by Paul Smith.
The exhibition is a celebration of this, bringing together a collection of tailoring made for and worn by some of the biggest names in entertainment. Highlights include a custom brown wool two-piece worn by Cillian Murphy to last year’s Oscar Nominees Luncheon; a burgundy two-tone double-breasted suit made for Jenna Ortega, for the premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice; a bespoke check ensemble worn by David Bowie during a famous GQ photoshoot (featuring a cameo by Paul), and other items worn by Harrison Ford, Matt Smith, Gary Oldman, John Legend, Shawn Mendes, and more.

Our shop on Melrose Avenue – affectionately referred to by Paul as ‘a big pink shoebox’ – could not be a more perfect venue for the exhibition. Situated in West Hollywood, it is just a stone’s throw from the heart of the film and television world, and is something of a landmark in its own right. As well as boasting one of the most Instagrammed exteriors in the whole city, the shop also contains a VIP & studio services suite which caters to an enviable clientele of A-listers and production studios, with a particular focus on red carpet dressing. During the exhibition, there will be a selection of vintage pieces available to purchase, sourced by our Melrose neighbour Luke Fracher.
A Frame Around a Picture: Dressing the Greats will run from 3rd – 21st October 2024 at Paul Smith Melrose Avenue. Below, explore looks from the exhibition.
